Nature/Natural Surroundings

Located just five miles from Waikiki and sitting high above the city, Nutridge Estate offers an intimate, family-style luau that is very different from the large-scale, highly produced luaus that you often find on Oahu. The natural setting, small size, and the warmth of the staff, combined with a strong focus on Hawaiian culture create a luau experience that feels truly unique and special.

Set on the Grounds of the Historic Nutridge Estate

Nutridge Estate is located within Pu’u ‘Ualaka’a Wayside Park, just above the popular Makiki Tantalus Lookout area. The estate is a registered historic structure and the site of the first Macadamia nut plantation established in Hawaii. Today the Nutridge Estate is owned by the State of Hawaii and leased to the Experience Nutridge Luau. Nutridge hosts community and private events and small, backyard-style luaus that are open to the public.

Nutridge Estate is located in a protected area, so luau attendance is restricted to small groups to limit the impact on the environment and the existing structures. Generally, there are less than 80 attendees per luau.

A portion of the revenues made from the Experience Nutridge luau are used to fund the maintenance and management of Hawaii’s state parks and help preserve and protect these special sites.

Pre-Dinner Activities

A special welcome ceremony is performed before guests may enter the luau grounds. Afterward, all guests receive a painted kukui nut lei. Meanwhile, adults over 21 years will receive a complimentary Mai Tai or Tequila Sunrise as they enter the luau grounds.

Aside from its stunning natural beauty and small size, another defining feature of the Nutridge Luau is that there are many cultural activities that guests get to experience throughout the evening. There are riveting fire-knife and hula performances held before dinner. Guests are also treated to a cultural demonstration on how to build an imu (in-ground oven). There are also hands-on activities that everyone can enjoy like weaving ti leaves or playing traditional games like Ulu Maika (lawn bowling) and spear throwing.

Nutridge Luau does a great job of teaching guests about Hawaiian culture in a way that is fun, entertaining, and engaging for guests of all ages.

Hawaiian Luau Feast

Dinner is served buffet-style after the evening’s games and cultural activities have ended. Dinner consists of traditional Hawaiian foods such as slow-roasted Kalua pork, Lau Lau, and Haupia (coconut pudding). Many other local favorites can be found on the buffet as well. Nutridge Estate proudly serves a farm-to-table luau menu, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

There is a cash bar located in the dining tent. Guests can choose from a selection of cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. Seating is located under a large event tent. Guests are protected from the elements, but they can still watch the sunset and see the lights of the Honolulu skyline in the background.

Evening Performance

Hula and other forms of Polynesian dancing are performed during dinner. And the best part is that everyone gets a front-row seat at this luau!

The Nutridge Luau show is not a big, loud stage production. It is more casual and laid-back, more like you might find at an authentic Hawaiian luau. You won’t be disappointed though. The performers at Nutridge are remarkable and you will find that the small, intimate space and the natural setting add their own kind of magic.

Getting There

Roundtrip transportation from Waikiki is available and can easily be added to your reservation during check-out.

If driving yourself, please be aware that the road to Nutridge is a steep, winding, and rough road. It can be a challenging driving experience for some drivers, especially after dark. Additionally, we do not recommend using taxis or rideshares for this venue. Mobile coverage can be spotty and you may have difficulty finding a ride home.

Special Considerations

  • Dress comfortably. You are visiting a state park with humble facilities and will be outside for hours, so wear walking shoes and come prepared for the elements. This includes sun, rain, and bug protection, and a light jacket for when the sun goes down.
  • The terrain is slightly hilly, and some walking about the estate is required. An alternate mode of transportation will be provided for those who need assistance.
  • Please make dietary requests in the comment section when making your reservation.
  • Guests 21 and over must present a picture ID to order or consume alcoholic beverages.
  • Dinner starts a bit later than you might expect, consider bringing a snack or eating a late lunch.
