Chief’s Luau is produced and hosted by Chief Sielu Avea. Chief Sielu is a real Samoan Chief and a world champion fire-knife dancer who has dedicated his life to promoting Polynesian culture and customs. The Chief has been entertaining and educating visitors to the islands for over thirty years.

Chief Sielu has been featured on more than a dozen popular television programs in the U.S. The Chief has also appeared on programs in many other countries. The Chief has even starred in a Sundance Film Festival featured film. And his most recent claim to fame was becoming a viral TikTok sensation.

In his early days, Chief Sielu was the first-ever world champion fire-knife dancer and performed on stages worldwide. He has since gone on to inspire and mentor several generations of fire-knife dancers. It’s no coincidence that Chief’s Luau attracts the top talent and has the largest and most elaborate fire-knife performance around.

The Chief is known for his charm and sense of humor. This, of course, sets the tone for the luau experience as a whole. This is a lighthearted, laid-back luau, with a welcoming staff, and you may be so busy being entertained that you might not even realize how much you are learning about Polynesian culture.

Pre-Dinner Activities

Guests are welcomed with a lei and are allowed to take photos with the performers. Before dinner service and the main show, about an hour is dedicated to cultural activities. During this time, guests can enjoy cocktails, try a weaving or hula lesson, and watch coconut husking and fire-starting demonstrations.

Luau Tip: 

Past luau guests rave about the tropical cocktails served in real pineapples. They’re a bit pricey but oh so much fun!

Hawaiian Luau Feast

Following a brief imu ceremony honoring the ancient Hawaiian tradition of slow-cooking a pig in an underground oven, it’s time to indulge in a delicious feast. The buffet spread showcases a variety of authentic luau delicacies, including succulent Kalua pork, lomi lomi salmon, traditional poi, and an array of beloved Hawaiian specialties. Indulge in our all-you-can-eat buffet, where you’re encouraged to enjoy seconds and even thirds! After all, this is a feast meant to be savored to the fullest.

Chief’s Luau Evening Performance

After dinner, it is finally time for the main event. Chief’s talented cast of dancers, performers, and musicians will take you on an exciting journey through the Pacific Islands. Experience the mesmerizing artistry of Hawaiian hula, Tahitian, and Tongan dance performances, the powerful Māori Haka, and an array of captivating cultural expressions.

Each performance leads up to the breathtaking finale featuring the electrifying Samoan Siva Afi, also known as the mesmerizing fire-knife dance. Chief’s Luau is famous for its fire-knife performance, showcasing a remarkable ensemble of up to twelve dancers in action!

To conclude the evening’s festivities, the Chief extends a special invitation to couples celebrating anniversaries and honeymoons to join him on stage for a heartfelt, intimate dance, as he serenades them

Luau Tip:

Chief’s Luau is considered a mid-sized venue, but like many luaus across Hawaii, it can experience a significant increase in guests during peak travel seasons. If attending during peak season: holidays, spring break, and the summer months, you may want to consider an upgraded package.

Getting There

Chief’s Luau is located at the Wet ‘n Wild Waterpark in Kapolei. This is about 25 miles from Waikiki and about four miles away from the resorts in Ko Olina. Drive times can vary greatly due to heavy rush hour traffic.

For the simplest and most hassle-free transportation option from Waikiki to Chief’s Luau, consider utilizing their convenient round-trip shuttle service for an additional fee. Shuttle service has seven convenient pick-up points scattered across Waikiki, and it also stops at the two cruise terminals in Honolulu (Piers 2 & 10).

Taxis and rideshares are not recommended for this venue, as coverage in Kapolei can be spotty, and it can be more expensive than taking the luau’s provided transportation.
