KA MOANA LUAU IS THE #1 BUDGET LUAU

We think that the Ka Moana Luau offers the best bang for your buck. It’s a popular budget-priced luau that lacks some of the tropical ambiance of luaus located away from the urban surroundings of downtown Honolulu. But there’s a lively party vibe that’ll make you glad you’re in Hawai‘i!

Location and Venue:  

Aloha Tower, Pier 9 Honolulu Harbor, 20-30 minutes from Waikiki

For almost a century, Aloha Tower has been an iconic landmark at Honolulu Harbor. A retired lighthouse that was once a beacon for ships sailing into Honolulu’s waters, Aloha Tower was  O‘ahu’s tallest building for decades until high-rises conquered the Honolulu skyline.

The luau venue is laid out on a large grassy area facing the ocean, giving visitors a unique oceanfront dinner theatre. There’s a large stage set up so that most seating will give you a decent view of the show, but paying for premium seating will give you a close-up view that is valuable at any event like a luau.

The sunset view at this location is spectacular. There are many tables set up for the luau, and that lessens the expansiveness of the grassy area and makes it feel somewhat crowded on busy nights.

Although this luau isn’t in a naturally tropical setting, there’s fun in the air! Being at Pier 9 is convenient for cruise ship passengers who are anchored nearby. It’s also easy for visitors who are shopping or walking in downtown Honolulu and Chinatown, or returning from touring Pearl Harbor. Many people find the convenience of having an outdoor luau right in Honolulu to be the best luau for their budget.

Ka Mea’ai – The Food:

The famous Chart House Waikiki restaurant, open since 1968, provides the delicious organic, locally sourced farm-to-table buffet dinner. A full-service bar is also available If you purchase a premium luau package, you’ll get better seating, table service for dinner and drinks, and a welcome Mai Tai.

Missing is the traditional imu ceremony where the cooked pig is removed from the underground oven. The kalua pig is not cooked onsite. If you aren’t interested in the imu ceremony, this budget-priced luau is a good choice. 

Entertainment:

Pre-show interactive cultural activities are where you can make leis, get a temporary tattoo, learn the hula, take drum lessons, weave a coconut headband, or watch a coconut tree-climbing demo that always amazes onlookers.

“Ka Moana” means “the ocean” in the Hawaiian language, and the night show will take you on a cultural voyaging adventure through the major Polynesian islands featuring their chants, songs, and dances. TOA LUAU IS A VALUE-PRICED LUAU AT WAIMEA VALLEY

Although Toa Luau costs slightly more than a budget luau, it is well worth it. The price for their luau includes a FREE PASS into Waimea Valley Botanical Garden and Waterfall, which helps make this a value-priced luau. Its authenticity amid the lush beauty of Waimea Valley makes it unique from any other luau on O‘ahu. On the days that they offer luaus, they offer two – one in the afternoon and one in the evening. The Botanical Garden is closed to the public during the evening luau.

Location and Venue:

Waimea Valley & Waterfall, North Shore, approx. 1.5 hr from Waikiki

Waimea Valley is considered a sacred place or wahi pana to Native Hawaiians. In ancient times, the valley was inhabited by a priestly class or kahuna.

Today there is a fee to gain access to the Botanical Garden and Waimea Falls (free entry with a luau ticket). The botanical garden showcases the broadest collection of diverse tropical plants housed in any one place on O‘ahu. There are paved walking paths and displays educate visitors on the uses and importance of both native and introduced plant species.

Waimea Falls is an easy hike of about ¾ mile into the valley, but you can also pay for a roundtrip ride in a golf cart. You’re free to swim in the pool at the base of the 40 ft high waterfall, and there are all sizes of free life jackets offered by staff at the waterfall. Why not go for a swim and then enjoy the luau afterward?

The luau is held in a large open-air pavilion that is in a quiet, secluded area surrounded by nature. This venue allows for a more authentic, personalized, and intimate luau experience.

Ka Mea’ai – The Food:

There is a demonstration of a Samoan umu, which is an above-ground method of cooking food instead of the below-ground imu used by the Hawaiians. You might even have a chance to taste the food once it’s uncovered – the baked taro root and breadfruit are yummy carbs!

The food is a typical luau menu, but the food is well-prepared and very tasty.

Unlike most other luaus, there isn’t a buffet. You don’t have to stand in line for your food. Everybody gets served at their table, and if you want to have seconds or need more of something, just wave and they’ll bring it to you. This is really nice and makes the guests feel appreciated.

Entertainment:

Everyone attending the luau is greeted with a flower lei. At most other luaus, you have to pay extra to get a flower lei. This is just another gesture that makes Toa Luau a value-added luau. The focus of Toa Luau is authenticity versus the glitz and bright lights that may be characteristic of other luaus.

The cultural activities offered before the luau are meaningful. They include weaving a headband and watching a demonstration on how to crack open a coconut (without a hammer!) One of the highlights is a Fijian kava ceremony. Kava is a traditional drink made from a root, and it’s known to have a calming effect on drinkers. Guests are offered a small sip of kava during the ceremony.

The earlier luau of the day ends about 4 pm, which is usually a good time for families with children or those who want to head back to Honolulu before dark.

The second luau of the day starts about 5 pm and ends between 8 and 9 pm. That may be a bit late to head home towards Honolulu, but the fire knife dancing is so much more dramatic once night falls.

Whichever luau you choose to attend, get to Waimea Valley about 3 hours early to get the full benefit of touring all areas of the botanical garden and waterfall before the show.

Keep in mind that Toa Luau does not provide transportation. This luau might be a hit to your budget if you need to rent a car for the day, but Waimea Valley is that special place that just might be worth it for you.

MAUKA WARRIORS LUAU IS A VALUE-PRICED LUAU ON BATTLEFIELD

Mauka Warriors means Mountain Warriors, and the venue is an outdoor setting on a mountaintop where ancient battles took place.  You’ll enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, the lights of Honolulu, and Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor in the distance. The sunset is stunning.

The tables are set up near the stage and everybody has a great view. They leave a lot of space between tables, so you never feel crowded. This might seem like a small issue, but it’s not. At some other luaus, you’ll pay for a budget-busting luau and you might be cramped at a table with strangers or craning your neck to watch the show.

Ka Mea’ai – The Food:

You’ll enjoy the all-you-can-eat Polynesian buffet. The variety of menu items may not be as numerous as other luaus offer, but the food is delicious and beautifully presented.

Everybody gets at least one free drink ticket with more available for purchase.

Entertainment:

Cultural guides will help you explore the sacred grounds where the Battle of Kipapa took place.  In that battle, Hawaiian warriors defended O‘ahu from invaders in the 15^th century. The guides will speak of the legendary King Kamehameha, Hawai‘i’s greatest warrior, and his mission to unite the islands. Battle re-enactments are presented theatrically.

The whole evening is about honoring the forgotten hero warriors in Polynesian history. The storytelling together with bringing those stories to life with music and dancing is artfully presented. You’ll love it because it is so thematically different from other luaus. And the fire knife dancing at this luau is outstanding! This luau is worth stretching your budget a bit.

There’s a family feeling to the presentation like it’s a family sharing their story with the guests.
